Watchable Wildlife

Updated: Apr 27, 2020

The greater Gadsden area is one of the most biodiverse areas of the country. Biodiversity is the variety of life in a particular habitat or ecosystem. According to the Nature Conservancy, Alabama ranks 1st for biodiversity in the U.S. in five categories: Freshwater Fishes, Freshwater Mussels, Freshwater Snails,Crayfish and Turtles. There is absolutely no better place in our area to observe this biodiversity than on the waters throughout our community. On April 4th, 2020 while paddling to prepare for the upcoming season, we spotted a bald eagle pair (number 5 on our list below) soaring above the lake and Big Wills Creek. The day when we can all be out on the water together cannot come soon enough. When it comes to watchable wildlife these are our top twelve favorites in no particular order! How many have you spotted?
